First Get Their Attention

Dear Parents,

Attachment Help

The Attach Place
Center for Strengthening Relationships

Traumatized, attachment challenged children are often lost in their own worlds.  When you want them to do something, first get their attention.  Find them, gently draw them out, make sweet eye contact, then give simple direction or ask a short question and wait for confirmation.  Talking into space, yelling down the hall, shouting commands, or walking away while talking backward will not get the job done.  If you don’t take the time to first get your child’s attention, then how can you expect your child to take the time to listen to you?  Just a thought to get you mindful and tuned in to the special hearing needs of your child.
